I've just come here the nicht to ask ye for yeer sympathy.
The only lass I ever had frae me has gone away.
It happen'd o'er a quarrel that we had last Sunday nicht.
She said I was in the wrong, but I said I was in the richt.
My heart is nearly broken, sometimes I think I'll choke
When I think about the promises she made.
She told me once sincerely that she lov'd me, oh so dearly,
So I've written her a letter and I've said.

Chorus
"Come back, Nanny, to your simple Sammy!
Nanny, dinna, say ye'll leave me noo!
Come back Nanny, dinna say ye canna,
'Cause I never lov'd anither lass but you.

Verse 2

I really don't know what to do, I've such a burnin' pain,
Burnin' like a poultice in below my watch and chain.
I really did look forward to lead such a happy life,
But that can never be unless she says she'll be my wife.
We used to go for long walks nearly ev'ry other nicht,
We used to wander down the lovers' lane;
It was such a time o' bliss, I did nothing else but kiss,
I'll never kiss another lass again.

Spoken:
I'll do something desperate. I'll difigure myself for life. I know what I'll do, grow
a whisker and cut my hair;   If I were to blame I'd give in;  but I'm not to blame. I know
who's to blame.   I know.  It's her mither.  She's the one.  Mind ye, her mither is a nice woman to
look at   quick. Then ye have to run for your life. If there's a bad place to go when ye die,  her
mither will go there.  I'm the first sweetheart Nanny ever had,  and I believe she is only doing this
quarreling to my sincerity.   And I believe she is here the nicht, listening if I'm saying anything
about her.   (Bussiness; looks around the audience says he sees her and sings to her-chorus)

Chorus
