In The village schoolhouse
playground stood a pretty little maid,
And close beside her
stood a little lad;
The little maid was
weeping, for the boy was leaving school.
And that's what made
her little heart so sad.
She ask'd him to remember
her, and hop'd while life would last,
He'd never forget
the promise made.
By the old well in
the meadows, where together they had sat,
And then she hung
her head, and blushing said..
Chorus
"I love you,
yes, I do
I will always think
of you, love...
If you'll think of
me how happy I shall be;
For I love you,
love, if you love me.
Verse 2
In a land far o'er
the ocean, 'neath a cloudless western sky.
Around a campfire's
dying embers lay.
a half a dozen miners,
and amongst them there was one
Whose thoughts that
night had wander'd far away.
He in a fancy saw
the schoolhouse, and the playground and the well,
The form and face
of her he lov'd so dear;
And it brought back
to his memory a day, now years ago,
And once again her
voice he seem'd to hear..
Chorus
Verse 3
Once again we see,
with lightsome hearts a happy loving pair,
Stand hand in hand
beside the village school...
Where often in sweet
childhood they had spent bright, happy days.
And side by side had
learn'd the golden rule...
the young man kiss'd
his bonnie bride, and stroked her golden hair;
Her head upon his
manly bosom lay;
Then he whisper'd,
"Sweetheart, darling, does your heart still beat the same
As once when you those
loving words would say...
Chorus
