Verse 1

I'm not long down from Scotland, that is my native hame,
And my name is Hielan' Mary;
A place called Auchtermuchty is the very place I claim,
When I came up to London, well, I thought men were free,
Because they stood and look'd and laugh'd and wink'd and blink'd at me
In fact, they went as far as ask me home with them to tea
Said I, "No porridge is the stuff for Mary!"

Chorus
Oh! Bonnie Mary, Bonnie Hielan' Mary,
You're the apple o' my eye,
And for you I would gladly die,
Oh! Hielan' Mary, will you marry me?
My sweet tomato hot potato, Bonnie Hielan' Mary.

Verse 2

Now, one time as a witness in a breach o'promise case
I was introduced as Hielan' Mary;
The court-house where the case was tried a bobby show'd the place,
Said he, "Come on with me, my bonnie Mary."
The lawyers when I look'd at them, I saw were ill at ease,
And the jury flock'd around me like a lot of busy bees
And the learned judge upon the bench declared he'd like to squeeze,
And said he'd like to cuddle bonnie Mary!

Chorus

Verse 3

A friend  took me a celebrated singer once to hear,
And I think he fell in love with Hielan' Mary;
But like a true born Scot, I thought the price (a schilling) dear,
At least it was a bit too high for Hielan' Mary.
When the singer came upon the stage his glance on me he flung,
And he look'd just like a fellow newly sentenc'd to be hung;
Then instead of singing , "Love's Old Song,' the one he should have sung,
He sang, "I'd would like to die for Hielan' Mary!"

Chorus

Verse 4

I went to hear a sermon in a kirk the other day,
And it did a lot o' good to Hielan' Mary;
I never got a compliment like what I did that day,
The preacher seem'd to stand and stare at Mary
The parson in the pulpit by my beauty was annex'd,
With no man in my mortal life I ever felt so vex'd,
Said he, "Dear friends, in Genesis the third, you know the text
Is  "I would like to marry Hielan' Mary

chorus
