I won't sing of a castle where a prince and princess dwell,
Or a mansion where might live a millionaire;
I won't sing of a palace or some ancient work of art,
But just a brig that spans the banks of Ayr.
They say it's getting out of date and crumbling all away.
And some folks want a new one, there's no doubt,
Forgetting the tradition of that humble mass of stone,
Which Burns our poet wrote so much about.

Chorus
It's an auld, auld structure, and and has seem some sunny days,
and it brings back fondest mem'ries as on it you first gaze.
To hear of it's destruction my scotch heart deeply mourns,
Preserve it for auld Scotland and the sake o' Rabbie Burns!

Verse 2

Now, Scotsmen all the wide world o'er, to hear of such a thing,
The news is sure to make them blush with shame.
To think they should demolish such a ancient work of art,
'Twould be an insult to poor Rabbie's name.
For many a time he crossed it, and he lov'd it, there's no doubt,
When he wrote the "Brigs of Ayr" as you must know.
'Twould be a fitting compliment to keep the dear auld brig
For patriotic feelings just to show.

Chorus

Verse 3

He rhymed about auld Ayr, and said no town could it surpass
For bonnie lassies aye, and honest men.
When he said it such a compliment, should Ayr forget
Because a hundred years have pass'd since then?
It's not for lack of money, for there's plenty in the land.
Which could be got if wanted, I dare say;
So preserve itin his honour to show we love the man
Whose songs are so immortalised today.
